These days, rivers in Borneo seem to be the past, while streets are the present and the future of the island. Sadly to say, The Existance Of Orang Utan Along The Rungan River will not be a bright future though.

It has been a whole nine days for our team taking around trip along Trans-Borneo from Nunukan region in the East Borneo. During this road trip, the jugnles with its variety of animals that’s closely related as theBorneo’s icon seem to be disappeared before our eyes. As far as your eyes can see, there are only coconut trees plantations along the ways. The jungles have been cut off fot the bussiness purpose, replaced by a more profitable plantation.
Arriving in Palangkaraya, the Borneo’s exploring team of 2009 decided to rest for a while from a preety dull road trip. They then prefer going to the jungle and the river for a refreshment. The 20mx6m Rahai’i Pangun Jungle River Cruise Boat is their appropriate choice for the next trip. This cruise boat is sailing along the Rungan river to the Kaja Island. This island is located in the center of the Rungan river, and it is the transit island for existance of Orang Utan. Kaja as the transit island is intended as the adapting place for orang utans before released to their natural habitat.
We notice these existance of Orang Utan are ignorant to the people passing by. It indicates that they are not yet ready to realise. Those who have become wild and tend to avoid the presence of human being are readily released to the jungles.
The live of the local inhibitants along with the magnificant beauty of Borneo’s nature is another charm to spoil the tourists’ eyes. At Sei Gobang Dayak Village in the riverbank of Rungan river for example, we can see many wooden boats unloading rubbers to the trucks that will leave for Banjarmasin, in the south of Borneo.
Many of local people are still using this river for the transportation. During this trip, we are often passing by with other wooden boats. near to the sunset time, we also see many people fishing at the rivers waving their hands to us, and we happily wave back at them.
After an exhausting road trip we just had, this boat trip is really something amazing. However, this great enjoyment costs us a bit fortune. To go on the Rahai’i Pangun jungle river cruise boat for 2 hours trip, a tourist must pay 400,000.00 Rupiah (It’s around 40US$). If you want to have whole boat for yourself only, you must be ready with 1200US$ to rent the boat for a day trip.
The boat’s operator also offer us two vacational packages on the cruise. The first package is for 5 days and 4 nights trip, and the other one is for 3 days and 2 nights trip. You can enjoy these packages in a comfortable boat where you can get 5 bedrooms equipped with toilets and showers, you will visit Dayak villages as well. There you can learn and see Dayak’s rich cultures.
Because of the rental price that’s considered expensive for domestic tourists, those who rent the boat are usually tourist from US, Australia, South Africa, England and Holland. However, you are still able to have the enjoyment with a saver cost. You can rent small boats belongs to the local people with the price around 150,000.00 to 250,000.00 Rupiah (It’s around 15US$ to 25US$) for 2 to 4 hours boat trip.
A boat trip Kahayan and Rungan rivers is initiated and started by 2 English women named Larna Dawson-Collins and Gaye Thavisin. They see that river vacation has a good prospect because the roads in Borneo are bad and there’s no spectacular view along the ways.
Lorna has been living in Palangkaraya since 1996 and can speak Indonesian very well. She falls in love with Borneo that she finnaly opens these vacational packages. Her intention is not merely on bussiness. She hopes that this can encourage people to maintance the jungles as the Borneo’s heritage. Beside that, 25% of the business profit is alocated on the microcredit to help the economic of local people.
Lorna and Gaye’s drea is like a breezze in the climate that is full of bussiness obsession. Indonesian governments altogether with elite businessmans seem to be busily dreaming on replacing the jungles with profitable plantations or replacing the rivers and canals built hundreds of years ago with high ways.
Lorna and Gaye have to work very hard to make their dreams come true, because the rivers are getting narrower and shallower each passing day. Lacking of water in the dry season and flood in the raining season have been common recently. Furthermore, the wild minings have poluted the rivers even worst.
