Diving in Tulamben Bali

diving in tulamben Diving in Tulamben BaliWhen divers see calm waters on a sunny day, it is as if they are being called forth to heaven to enjoy diving in Tulamben Bali, the marine paradise.

When we arrived at Tulamben, one of Bali’s most frequented diving spots, the water was calm and there was a light breeze of refreshing wind. Nature’s beautiful welcome more than made up for our 2.5 hour drive from Sanur, where we had spent the night. Getting out of the car, there was a strong buzz of excitement among us.

Our diving guide from Bali Diving, Chris, seemed to sense our mounting enthusiasm and tried to speed up preparations for our adventure. But he still needed to stick to the procedure. He explained the diving plan after the usual dos and don’ts briefing.

“We are going to dive at the following spots: the US Liberty Shipwreck, Coral Garden and the Drop Off,” he said, pointing to the underwater map.

diving in tulamben 2 Diving in Tulamben BaliWhile some people were still putting on their BCD (Buoyancy Control Device), Chris signaled to those who were ready to go with him. We walked some 100 meters along the sandy beach from the Paradise Resort, our base camp, to begin our adventure, diving to the entry point site.

Chris reminded us to walk carefully when we were approaching the edge of the beach, which was full of volcanic stones as big as adult’s fist.

In a day at least 50 divers visit the diving site. They usually came in groups and the must-see spot was the shipwreck location.

“When holiday season comes the number (of divers) can double,” Chris said.

The US Liberty shipwreck, which was torpedoed by the Japanese army during World War II, attracts divers to Tulamben. Those who prefer snorkeling can enjoy the ship stern for it is only located some 6 meters under the water surface with average visibility of 12 to 30 meters.

History has it the ship, which sunk in Lombok waters, was about to be towed to Singaraja port in North Bali but as Singaraja was already occupied by Japan army, the shipwreck was rerouted to Tulamben beach.

Mount Agung’s powerful volcanic eruption in 1963 pulled the shipwreck deeper to the seabed – its present home -where it is heavily covered with anemone, gorgonian and coral.

When we reached the shipwreck, two schools of bright, silver trevally fish swam past us as if patrolling the site. They perfectly contrasted with the dark sand.

Hundreds of trevally moved in circles. They swam around the shipwreck and did not seem afraid of us. Locally known as kuwe, the trevally even approached some divers. Chris got an amazing welcome from surgeonfish that swarmed him as if performing their welcoming dance. Fishes in Tulamben are indeed friendly and recognize no fear – unlike in other less visited diving spots.

I remembered when I got a similar warm welcome from a school of small fishes in Bunaken, North Sulawesi. It was a priceless moment. The fishes not only “danced” around me but they also “kissed” my diving mask.

So when I saw what happened to Chris, I lifted my underwater camera and began pressing its shutter release to capture the precious moment and other beauties nearby.

If we observed carefully enough, we could spot ikan sebelah (flounders) and blue-spotted stingrays that hid beneath the sand, waiting for their lunch.

diving in tulamben 3 Diving in Tulamben BaliNot far from the shipwreck, I saw dozen of garden eels, eating floating planktons. Their bodies danced to the gentle sea currents that moved gently in this site. Many others rested with half of their bodies submerged in the seabed.

Our second destination was the Coral Garden, which was located right in front of the Paradise Resort. This garden is 2 to 15 meters depths, making it the perfect destination for snorkeling.

This spot has both soft and hard coral with light density. Yet, they were rich with marine life, including Napoleon fish, pipefish, parrotfish and clownfish. Even barracudas, which had sharp teeth, were seen swimming nearby when we got there. Chris said divers could come across blacktip sharks if they were lucky.

Columns between the soft and hard corals were the perfect hideout for shrimps. Local divers called them cleaner shrimps. One type was red and white but there was also one with combinations of red, white and green.

Fellow diver Emily Douglas from US was intrigued to find out if the shrimps were natural vacuum cleaners. She extended her hands to the shrimps, which immediately swarmed her hands and performed their famous duties.

Because of its average depth and generous light, this spot was also known as a perfect site for night-diving and heaven for hunting objects for macro-photography.

Our last destination was the Drop Off, located on the right side of Coral Garden. We walked to go to the side and had to go through the rocky beach.

The Drop Off site was formed naturally by a volcanic eruption. Our adventure began on a sandy slope, which was the starting point of the standard dive at Tulamben. At the end of the slope we could see the Drop Off’s topography in the form of vertical walls whose depth could reach tens of meters.

The wall was heavily decorated with sponges and black coral. The marine life at this site is not very different to the Shipwreck site. There were butterflyfish, angelfish, Moorish idols and many other small fish with striking colors. Coral fish like groupers and anthias can also be seen at this site. Lucky divers can spot bigger fishes like whitetip and hammerhead sharks.

In general, Tulamben waters have relatively good visibility ranging between 12 and 30 meters. Its subtle currents make this place suitable for divers of any level.

Visiting Tulamben is a must for divers whenever they are in Bali. A growing number of diving operators are proof of the growing popularity of this recreational sport. Dive operators usually offer transport and accommodation, as well as alternatives to diving and snorkeling.

Tulamben has been included among spots recommended by nearly all diving operators, and is one of the best places to begin your underwater adventures. Nusa Lembongan Island and Nusa Penida Island are also very popular dive site.

Amazing Lombok Diving

diving in lombok Amazing Lombok DivingLombok Diving become one of the best of Lombok AttractionsThere are about three tiny island nearby Lombok Island. These islands are surrounded by the coral, and they are very popular called as Gili Islands Lombok. Gili Island is located off Lombok’s on the west coast. They are rapidly becoming one of the favorite spot for the divers. There is a number of Dive centers which have almost all of high modern equipment and also professional dive instructors to ensure that the divers, whether they are beginner divers or experienced divers can dive in waters that have more varieties of fishes than anywhere in the world, and that includes The Great Barrier Reef and Red Sea.

GILI TRAWANGAN
When we talk about Lombok Diving, we would not forget Gili Trawangan Lombok because Gili Trawangan now appears to head the list as the most popular island – it has long had a reputation as the ‘party’ island mainly through a concentrated and central foreshore area of restaurants, dive operations and hotels including some luxury boutique choices.

GILI MENO
Gili Meno Lombok still the quietest island is a place to escape to and although it has a smaller list of accommodation options those that it has are tending towards a more up-market clientele. In Gili Meno Island, you can snorkeling and diving. Snorkeling off beaches of pure white sand the coral is superb. Definitely great choice to diving in Lombok. However, Gili Meno is worth to visit..

GILI AIR
Gili Air Lombok has the largest local population and while it has more of a lived-in feeling than the other two islands for some that is quite possibly its attraction. On Gili Air it’s possible to likewise enjoy the marine possibilities but also one can absorb some of the local culture missing on the other islands.

In addition to the Gilis there are many other dive and snorkel possibilities such as an area now being prmoted on the rugged south coast where the experienced can now dive among hammerheads and rays.

There is also another interesting island near to these three gili islands. It’s called Gili Nanggu.

GILI NANGGU
Gili Nanggu Lombok is a small Island Southwest of Lombok with a beautiful white sandy beach, it is surrounded by many small Islands, which also beautiful place for snorkelling and swimming. There are also several Gili islands in the near gili nanggu ideal for snorkeling and diving such as Gili Kedis, Gili Poh, Gili Gede and many more to west side of sekotong bay.

Diving in South Lombok and Sout West Lombok
diving in lombok 2 Amazing Lombok DivingThe diving in the south of Lombok is not very widely known, quite good but challenging. There is one dive operator in the Bay of Blongas (Bay of Tranquility). The Bay of Blongas is a large sheltered bay with a peninsula. The waters here are calm, but as soon as cross the narrow mouth around Gili Wayang, the sea gets much rougher and choppy with a strong surge. The interesting dive sites all lie here, mostly steep rocks and boulders some half covered with water so this is only for experienced divers! The dive sites are all 20 to 30 min by speedboat form the resort. Visibility is not so good at most places 15 to 20m.

Diving in Lombok, especially in the South of Lombok, some people said only for divers who had over 50 dives tanks but some beginner divers also available but not in Magnet area ( Blongas bay ) but in Kuta bay Area.

diving in lombok 3 Amazing Lombok DivingFor divers who would like to enjoy some pristine dive sites, we offer a world of 100% intact coral and a unique variety of species. “…It’s an Eldora do for underwater photographers.” Aside from all this, there are deep-water pinnacles, where experienced divers (min. Advanced Cert./+ 50 dives) can find lot of big fishes: barracudas, mackerels, and even hammerheads.

But, In South of Lombok, Not only for experianced Divers, For beginner also there is several spots available for them, JJR, Plawangan, Tanjung A’an and Gili Medas is for those who like to see coral reefs which much better the Gili Islands.

diving in lombok 4 Amazing Lombok DivingThe area has a very rough look, the landscape is very impressive, with large waves pounding jagged rocks and lots of white spray everywhere. From the boat you can see some beautiful sandy beaches, stretching for kilometers but empty, because of the waves crashing some way our. The bay itself though earns its name of “Bay of Tranquility” because it is very flat and calm with nice beaches and small fishing villages. It can be reached from Lembar harbor (ferry from Bali about 4 to 5 hrs) in about an hour over a very bad road.

DIVE SPOT INFORMATION

01. MAGNET
This dive sites is the reason why most divers come here, mainly because there is a good chance to see hammerhead sharks. This is a large rocky pinnacle ljutting up from about 50 m eters below. It lies in the open sea and 20 to 30 min. by boat. Large waves crash on top of the rock and over it and the resulting surge can be felt even down at 20 meters! Actually you can only dive safely below 15m because of the surge and all the bubbles in the water and safety stops are made away from the rock. For experienced divers only!

You dive on the north side of the rock and make a drop right in the middle, if possible. If the currents are not so strong you can now continue the dive by going in zigzag back and forth between the eastern and western edge where the currents coming from the south can be felt strongly. The large pelagics such as hammerheads, white tip sharks, mackerels and barracudas congregate here in large numbers. If the currents are fiercer, the area where you can dive narrows with side currents pushing you towards the middle of the sheer wall. If the currents lessen you can even dive entirely around the rock which even then is still a challenge, because you have to fight against both current and surge..

The amount of fish you see is quiet amazing and during our week there we saw a lot of really large dog tooth tunas, some mobulas (like manta rays, but smaller) and eagle rays, several sharks including hammerheads and twice we just seem to hit a wall of barracudas – great! We also went once out to the Magnet and decided not to dive, because it was too dangerous. The other dive sites are more sheltered, so we went there.

02. Coral Garden
You dive around two larger rocks with a series of smaller rocks which lie on sand. Lot’s of soft corals in yellow, orange and purple colors, whip corals, some gorgonians and anemones. We found some nice nudibranchs and shrimps and also saw a school of small barracudas. An easy dive, max. depth about 25m.

03. Wollis Pinnacle
When you are diving in Lombok, you will find a large rock which top is about 7m below the surface and some more rocks tumbled together and lying on white sand. We saw a black giant frogfish, sharks, ribbon eels and several species of nudibranchs. There is sheltered area with gorgonians, table corals and black corals. An easy but interesting dive, max. depth 19m.

04. Gili Sera
This island is a big junk of rock. Underwater it looks like large pieces of the rock fell down and are now litterling the sand all around the island. These rocks are covered with leather corals, sponges and tunicates, but there are some more sheltered areas where table corals and black corals grow. When the currents are not very strong, this is a nice dive site for small animals such as nudibranchs, shrimps, glass fishes, scorpion fishes and even the occasional sea snake, white tip reef shark or ray.

05. The Cathedral
This large pinnacle rises from about 40m to the surface. Only a small rock is visible from the surface and zthe crashing waves fills the upper 5m of water with bubbles. You dive on a steep wall covered with soft corals, sponges and tunicates. There are yellow sea cucumbers everywhere. We encountered two species of sea snakes, the common banded sea krait and I think the turtlehead sea snake (Emydocephalus annulatus). The later has a much larger head and a brown color but also some lighter colored bands.

The swell makes you go up and down a lot – not so good for your ears – and like on the Magnet we actually surfaced from about 10m by swimming away some distance to avoid the swell.

06. The Highway Dive
The extensive reef north of Sekotong is a popular site for morning dives. The reef runs for about 3 km with sidetracks veering off to the right and left. The top of the reef starts at 18m and descends to a sandy bottom at about 32m. A huge variety of species can be found here with abundant pellagics like Jacks, Trevallies, White tip Reef Sharks, Rays (including Mantas) and much more.

This northern reef takes you down to about 26m, and is home to a multitude of colorful reef fish: Lionfish, Sergeantfish, Gobies of all sorts, and an array of Nudibranchs. It’s a great night dive destination, as it is home to many Lobsters and Crustaceans. Uh oh, we might get hungry on this one guys!

08. Trilogy Dive at Sekotong
A marvelous reef in the northwest, this dive site still needs to be explored as there are three main routes. So far we have found Shrimp, Ghost pipefish, and Glass fish, Blue spotted rays, Cuttlefish, Moray eels and a lot more. Off the reef in the blue you might see a White tip Reef Shark posing for you.

09. Sunken Island Dive
This soft slope to the west of Sektong is very popular for relaxed and colorful diving. Groupers, Batfish, Trumpetfish, shy Octopus, and bearded Scorpion fish can be found around the deeper coral blocks. With a little luck you can see Eagle Rays and Mantas cruising out in the blue.

10. Gili Renggit Dive
Another favorite in the west is Gili Renggit, as it offers rare species for the macro fan. The corals are alive with Nudibranchs, Ghost pipefish, and colorful Shrimp. Can you find the camouflaged Frog fish? Let the Cleaner Shrimp give you a manicure or teeth cleaning.

11. Stairs to Medang Dive
Terracing down from 14m to about 35m this site provides a fascinating underwater landscape where you can experience the Indopacific at it’s best with Mantas, different species of Sharks, and plenty of lively reef fish in all colors and sizes. On the top of the plateau Lobsters and Turtles make frequent appearances.

12. Batu Gendang Dive
“The drum stone” descends to about 25m with massive blocks giving you the impression of diving a labyrinth. It is the home to Whitetip Reef Sharks, Napoleonfish, and many Sweetlips.

13. Batu Mandi Dive
Dive with different species of Sharks, Tuna, Jacks, and Barracudas. Even schools of Eagle Rays are a possibility. Ooh, I hope we get this lucky!

Many of the older generation still make their living as boatmen, fisherman and farming coconuts.

There are only a few number of 2 to 3 stars hotels (rooms with air conditioning, swimming pool, TV etc) on Gili Air. Most of the places to eat and stay are in south and east side of the island (near the jetty). You can find many home stays or budget accommodation on this island.

Gili Air diving Exploring Gili Air LombokNot much things happening for the last 3 to 5 years. One of the first dive schools (The Reef seeker) is no longer operate from Gili Air. Gili Air Island Exploring Gili Air Lombok

How to get to Gili Air
If you are in Bali, it’s easy to go to Gili Air Lombok. You can to join a tour, or you can rent a small boat. If you are in Lombok Island, it’s even easier to get to Gili Air. It’s only 15 minutes to get there. You just need to spend around 30,000 to 40,000 rp for one-way trip, or Rp 70,000 include the cost land transfer from Senggigi.

Alternatively, the Gilis can be visited on a day trip from Senggigi, in which case you’ll get your own little boat and crew to take you around. The trip across take 1-2 hours each way and is quite scenic, if a little bumpy when the waves are high. Available from any travel agent, figure on Rp 400,000 for a tour for two.

Note that the sea is calmest in the morning and all transport stops running in the afternoon, well before dark.

In a rare display of foresight, all forms of motorized transport are banned from the islands: your only choice is horse-drawn carts, known as cidomo, which are used even to shuttle around diving gear. However, as the islands are only a few km in diameter, it’s entirely possible to just walk instead.

Sea and Do
There are no sights as such on the islands themselves, but the excellent snorkeling and diving all around is a major draw. Sea turtles are also common, especially around Turtle Point just north of Gili Meno Lombok. You can rent masks and fins off the beach, or contact any of the numerous dive shops to arrange snorkeling or diving at the choice spot nearby.
