Indonesia has two seasons known as the dry season and the wet season. During the dry season, you will find that the wave is generally much larger, more often and much longer one. From Uluwatu heading north you will come to Padang Padang which only breaks properly in 4ft+ swell offering an easy take off into a barrel section from hell, once your out you can fade into the inside section which is can be made but is can close down depending on the swell direction. From the same spot you can paddle to Impossible’s which is a long wave with a few take off spots and seemingly impossible sections. Along from here is the perfect left hand barrel vending machine known around the world as Bingin where a tiny take off sport is shared between a crowded pack of surfers. Next you have dreamlands which has two deeper peaks and an inside beach break and around the corner again you will find Balangan which is another left which suffers from sectioning in smaller swells. After this you will find the airport waves and Kuta reef which require a short boat ride to reach or in the case of Kuta reef a possible long paddle, gone are the days of jumping.

Other spots include the left hand Malibu wave known as Medewi which is a long journey from Kuta and a mellow wave over a rocky point and a laidback jungle like atmosphere surrounding it. Canngu is a wedgey sandbar and a left and right reef, there is a large crowd surrounding this area and due to a few pros and surf video producers living in villas nearby, there are often pros appearing as well as a number of keen locals and many others.

Bali surfing has been gaining popularity for the Balinese, especially the youth. Soon after the day is started, there are many young Balinese hurrying to the beach for surfing. Lombok island is located about 80 kilometers in the north to south Bali and about 70 kilometers east to west. The places in this island is really dry and tougher than generally places of Bali. This is probably why the Sasak area (most of population’s ethnic group), Bumi Gora is a name for Lombok, that factually means “The Dry Island”. Gunung Rinjani which is located in 3726 meters is the tallest Indonesian volcano, and the most awesome of Lombok Attractions.

The waves in around Lombok Island is very interesting for survers to Lombok Surf. It’s most of which are concentrated on the island’s West Coast and along a south coast ragged with bays, beaches and dramatic headlands. You will not find as many surf spots on Lombok like in Bali, but they are usually less crowded and physically more beautiful as natural locations. One particular place, known to locals as Bangko-Bangko (but to surfers the world over as Desert Point), is one of the world’s premier left hand surf spots when it’s working. This impulsive, but perfect and long point break requires a swell of good direction and size to fire, but given those requirements it more than produces the barelling goods. Desert starts off small at the take-off, then, as it winds down the reef, the wave will increase in size and barrel on down the line. There are other waves in this southern region and even some in the Gilis, though normally on solid swells.

Desert Point
Desert point, one of the longest waves in the world, when it’s good, maybe even the best left in the world: Long, barreling, warm, and consistent. Crowds are getting worse every year though.

Inside Gerupuk
The break is very sheltered as it’s in a bay, and it has great shape, so it’s ideal for beginners. There’s a more raw wave outside the bay.The sea bed is mainly seagrass, which can tickle, but doesn’t hurt too badly.

Kuta Lombok
Kuta beach Lombok is one of best spot to surfing in Lombok. There are two large, steep hills right near the break. Easy to spot from the hotel and from the water. Head out from here and start walking across rocks,coral, and sea urchins until its deep enough to paddle. Find the channel, its very close to a huge rock out in the water, be careful not to ride close to it, because it gets shallow. The waves are nice, but trying to get back out is really annoying. Getting pounded. We saw two guys who looked to be good, and they had some sick rides but they were getting worn out. I’m not really that good, I only lasted a little, and caught one ride, but it was good. I’m definitely a beginner, but I don’t think I’ll ever try that spot again, it was just too much for me to catch one. The reef goes into a large bay which is right in front of the hotel Novotel. It can get shallow.

Mawi
Mawi is also a great Lombok surf place. The take off is very fast, then monster barrel (you could put a bus in it), very scary, with the wind go out at the end. The wave is not very long. And don’t go in the water by the rocks on your left even if it seems more faster, too dangerous if a big set is coming.

Outside Gerupuk
Even though it’s flat there is always a wave. Has a few takeoff peaks and the outside peak is always double size of the others. No good quality wave though.

Inside Ekas
Inside Ekas is best known as a left and right hand peak which breaks in medium and large swells. The right is a high quality wave, particularly on low tide, suitable for advanced surfers. The left winds down the reef at high tide, a softer wave ideal for the less experienced surfer who wants a classic long ride. Both short and long boards are suitable on the left. The ride is longer at Ekas, but the left wave is like the well-known Grupuk peak, which has attracted many surfers from all over the world, particularly Japanese visitors.

Outside Ekas
Outside Ekas, a solid left break, is best on high tide in large swells when a very long, heavy wave peels over 400-500 m down the reef and barrels in sections. The square take-off jacks up into a thick lip, over deep reef. Outsides also works when the swell is smaller, particularly around mid tide … a bit peaky at times, but still fun.
