Language
There are lots of regional languages in Indonesia, but the National language used is known as Bahasa Indonesia. It is relatively easy to learn, because the pronunciation of the Indonesian words is commonly the same as what are written. However, you do not need to get worried about the language, because in most of tourism destinations in Indonesia, English has become the most used International language, both written and spoken.
Currency>Rupiah (IDR), abbreviated Rp. = 100 sen. Notes are in denominations of Rp100,000, 50,000, 20,000, 10,000, 5000, 1000, 500 and 100. Coins are in denominations of Rp1,000, 500, 100, 50 and 25. In major centers, travelers cheques in US dollars are readily accepted and most hotels in tourist or commercial centers will accept major credit cards.
Currency Exchange
>Another important Indonesia Travel Tips is relating to the currency exchange. Your credit cards may become handy during your vacation in Indonesia, because ATM machines are spreading all around, especially in the big cities and major tourism destinations. These ATM machines are commonly accepting the Visa, MasterCard and also American Express. However, when you are going to more remote places, you are suggested to have some cash that you think will be necessary during the journey. Small denominations are better than the bigger one. Before you are going for vacation to Indonesia, you’d better check the services and any detail of merchant acceptability of your debit or credit card companies.
Note :
When you are using your credit cards for any purchasing, paying bills or stuff, you need to be aware of any fraud or cloning to your credit card’s numbers, because it is a quite major issue in Indonesia. If your cards have access to MasterCard and Visa, they will be more widely accepted rather than the American Express one. When you are using the credit cards, you will commonly be surcharged with 2-5% over the amount of cash paid.
Money Changers
One of the Indonesia travel tips that you must be aware of is when you are exchanging your money in Money Changers, you need to look for the trusted one. There are some money changers which are likely using any trick to distract your attention in the process of counting the money. It is highly suggested that you go with a friend when you want to exchange your money in the money changer, so that he/she will help you watching the transaction. Do not directly being tempted by the great rates offered by the money changers, because there are times when they use this technique to get you into them, and finally shortchange you. They will commonly give you the denomination of Rp.20.000,- to confuse you with lots of counting, and if you are not careful, you will get confused and get less money than the actual amount. However, if you are aware of the transaction, and they cannot outwit you, they will then use another trick by subtracting you 6-8% as their commission or taxes.
Travellers cheques
Limited merchant acceptance but can be easily exchanged at banks and larger hotels. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travellers are advised to take travellers cheques in US Dollars or Pounds Sterling.
Tipping
You will learn that whenever you are paying bills for International hotels or restaurants in Indonesia, you will have a service charge in the bills. Similar to other places around the world, the appreciation of having a good service in the form of giving tips is always expected. However, even though you are not giving any, Indonesian people are commonly always friendly and giving you their very best services.
Tipping taxi drivers Rp. 1,000 or leaving the change is appreciated but not mandatory. It is advisable to carry small change as taxi drivers are often short of change.
Taxi Security
In Jakarta most taxi companies have an alert light on the top of the car which is activated in case of an emergency (robbery of or by a passenger). Other taxi drivers or policemen see the light on and realize that the taxi driver or passenger is in need of assistance. In addition to this standard alert light, all Blue Bird Group taxis have a hidden security device which, if activated, enables the dispatcher to overhear and record the conversation between the driver and passenger using a special radio frequency. This provides protection both for the driver and the passengers. An alert goes out in the case of a true emergency and the taxi is quickly surrounded by other Blue Bird taxis to ensure the safety of the driver and passenger. No need to wait for the uncertain response from the police.
